There are several important devices used in networking, and each one has its job. One common network device is a router. The router’s main function is to connect different networks, like your home network, to the internet. It sends information between your devices, such as phones, laptops, and gaming consoles, and makes sure the data gets to the right place. Routers also usually include a firewall to help protect your network from outside threats. Another important device is a switch.
A switch is used to connect multiple devices within the same local area network, or LAN. For example, in an office or a school, a switch allows many computers to communicate with each other and share information. It helps direct the data only to the device it is meant for, which improves the speed and performance of the network. The third device is a modem.
A modem is what brings the internet into your home from your Internet Service Provider (ISP). It changes digital signals from your devices into a format that can travel over phone lines, cable, or fiber optic lines, depending on the type of internet you have. These three devices—routers, switches, and modems work together to help people get online and stay connected to the internet and each other.
