The different ways that a computer system can be improved or upgraded by adding more hardware components are referred to as computer expansion options. With these choices, users can enhance their systems’ capabilities, functionality, and performance without having to replace the entire computer (Baloni et al., 2023). Usually, the motherboard or computer case’s expansion slots, connectors, and extra drive bays allow for expansion.
Adding Random Access Memory (RAM) is a popular expansion option. Increasing RAM enhances system performance and enables a computer to manage multiple tasks at once (Ielmini & Pedretti, 2025). Because it lowers system lag and enhances multitasking capabilities, more RAM greatly benefits users who run numerous apps, huge software programs, or contemporary operating systems.
The graphics card (GPU) is another significant expansion option. Sharma (2023) suggests that to enhance visual performance, a PCI Express expansion slot can be used to install a graphics card. Users that work in gaming, video editing, graphic design, and 3D modeling will particularly benefit from this. Compared to integrated graphics, a dedicated graphics card analyzes complicated visual data more effectively, producing smoother pictures and faster rendering.
Expanding storage is another popular upgrade choice. Additional solid-state drives (SSDs) or hard disk drives (HDDs) can be added by users to boost system speed and storage capacity (Rohilla et al., 2025). When compared to conventional hard drives, SSDs in particular offer faster data access and boot times. This enhances system responsiveness while enabling users to store more files, programs, and multimedia content.
The network interface card (NIC) or Wi-Fi adapter, which improves network connectivity, is another helpful expansion option. These gadgets can connect to high-speed networks, offer wireless capabilities, or increase internet speeds.
