ParticipantThe four network devices are hubs, routers, gateways, and modems. A hub is a physical layer network device used to connect multiple devices on a network. Typically used to connect computers on a LAN. A hub has many ports. Computers that connect to the network are connected to one of these ports. Routers form networks and manage the flow of data within and between those networks. Modems, on the other hand, connect those networks to the Internet. Modems connect to the Internet by converting signals from your ISP into digital signals that connected devices can interpret. A modem receives a signal from your ISP and converts it into a signal that local devices can use, and vice versa. The connection between your home and the Internet is called a wide area network (WAN). Each modem is assigned a public IP address that identifies the modem on the Internet. A gateway is a computer on a network that provides an interface between two applications or networks that use different protocols. Also used to connect to the Internet. Gateways in a network convert information from one protocol to another and send it over the Internet.

ParticipantGreat explanations again on this discussion. I like the details and how well explained it is and think it is very good, I also mentions some of these as they were the ones that came to mind, and like your details on them.

ParticipantA few networking devices include routers, hubs, access points and a switch. A router is used to send data to a computer network and they connect to different devices to improve your internet access and connections. You can also use a router if you need more than a few devices connected to the same Wi-Fi as well. A Hub is also used to connect multiple devices onto a network but are most commonly used to connect computers to LAN’s. The device you use on the hub has to be plugged into one of the outlets on the hub to connect to the network you wish to connect it to. Access points are a device that is used to create a wireless network connection and they are used mostly in offices and other buildings if connected and on a WLAN. The access point is connected to the routers to better support and protect the Wi-Fi signal. And a switch is used to also connect multiple devices like the routers and printers. This helps the devices receive information from one another.

ParticipantGreat explanations on network devices and their essential functions. Just as a switch connects multiple devices to create, a router connects multiple switches, and their respective networks, to form an even larger network. These networks may be in a specific location or across multiple locations. When building a small business network, you will need one or more routers.

ParticipantRepeater- when a network signal needs to travel over long distances, the signal will weaken the further it travels. A repeater will receive the signal and boost the strength of the signal and send it to its destination. A repeater is defined as a layer one device. repeaters are used for both wired connections, as well as wireless.
Router- A router directs network traffic to the receiving IP address. Routers are common in households with an internet connection, as most internet providers install a modem and possibly provide a router is needed. Routers provide network security with WPA2 password protection. Some models of routers offer wireless capabilities as well. Routers let multiple devices use the same internet connection by assigning local IP addresses. A router is defined as a layer three device.
Switch- A common term used in networking that I have trouble to get a full understanding, as I do not work professionally in IT. A switch from what I understand is a device that receives and forwards data by mac address rather than IP addresses. Going by mac address allows for faster data transfer over local networks and is a lower tiered device at level two.

ParticipantThese network device descriptions were spot on. Switches are highly useful in managing a network or separating devices that do not need to communicate with one another. Also, routers are one of the most important devices in use in networking as they allow computers to join the wider internet through other networks. Truly a cornerstone of information technology.

ParticipantSo, a network switch can limit access to devices and control the flow of data. A network switch seems to be an added layer of security then, since it’s a level two device I assume it works on a local level. I appreciate the response, thank you.

ParticipantOne network device is the repeater which is a layer one network device. This device is used to receive a signal and send it out unaltered at a stronger power to reach a further distance. This is to avoid the risk attenuation which would weaken or eliminate the signal entirely.
A second network device is a bridge. This is a level two network device and is used to extend and connect physical networks together. Bridges help avoid collisions and creates separate domains for collisions, thus increasing bandwidth availability.
The third network device is the gateway, this level three network device is a node on a computer network. Gateways act as stopping points for information on their war to another network. They can allow information to pass through or deny it’s entry into the network. -

ParticipantThree devices include, routers, switches and modems. Routers are used both in home and business environments they have many functions but their primary function is to route data and is typically the center of a home network many home routers include functions such as firewalls and DHCP some higher end models support VLANS. A switch is a device that allows multiple devices to connect to the same router/switch/computer port by sorting out data and sending to a specific connected device. A modem is the device that connects a local network to the ISPs many of which also serve as routers in a home or small business network.
