Why Career Opportunities in Cybersecurity are Growing

The growing field of cybersecurity is creating both profitable and dependable careers. These are flexible and mobile careers which make cybersecurity one of the top careers in the years 2020 and 2021.

There are several reasons as to why cybersecurity is a growing field:

1. Growing Field of Cybersecurity: COVID-19

The Coronavirus has stripped several people of their jobs for many reasons, the main reason is that people do not have the ability to work in an office.  Social distancing has prevented people from being able to gather, so COVID-19 has forced employers and employees to become more dependent on the internet as a way of connecting with others. Which is great for a lot of people.  However, hackers are using this to their advantage to sell fake COVID-19 cures, steal people’s personal information, and interfere with elections.

As a result, individuals seeking cybersecurity careers are needed to help protect people’s information as more and more people become dependent on the internet.

Voting and COVID-19: A Cybersecurity Perfect Storm

According to an article by The Washington Post, “voting systems that rely on the internet are becoming a major conflict zone in the battle to secure the 2020 election against hacking.” Scammers pose as fundraisers, pollsters and voting sites and impersonate candidates in order to steal people’s personal identification. According to an article by AP News, “The FBI reported that complaints to its cybercrime reporting site jumped from 1,000 a day to 3,000-4,000 a day since the pandemic began.” In addition to this, hackers have the ability to change large numbers of votes and block votes from being recorded. This is one reason why the growing field of cybersecurity is creating jobs rapidly.  Democracies around the world are seeking to secure their elections now and in the future. Persons with cybersecurity careers make sure attacks are taken seriously and dealt with immediately. This situation emphasizes how COVID-19 had affected the cybersecurity field.

2. Growing Field of Cybersecurity: Hackers are Getting Smarter

Hackers find new ways to access data every day. People use the internet more on a daily basis, so these attacks are becoming more frequent. According to an article by review42.com, by 2021, businesses will fall victim to cybercrime every 11 seconds. This statistic was 45 seconds in the year 2019.  Which means that cybercrime is occurring at a rate 4Xs what it was just 2 years ago. Due to COVID-19, hackers have had time to develop their craft, so their skills are becoming more sophisticated and a growing number of professionals with cybersecurity careers are needed.

Cybercrime is expensive and not many companies can afford a data breach, so cybersecurity professionals are hired instead. By the year 2021, it is estimated that cybercrime will cost the world over $6 trillion and Americans could lose $15 billion annually due to identity theft. These are staggering numbers, and they explain why cybersecurity is projected to expand.  According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook in the cybersecurity field is projected to increase 31% between 2020 and 2029.

COVID-19 has affected many careers in many different ways, but it has given professionals in the growing field of cybersecurity the opportunity to grow and change. As people continue to become further dependent on the internet, cybercrime could continue to increase. Now that hackers have had the time to develop their craft, their skills have become more sophisticated and cybersecurity professionals are needed to detect and erase these data breaches. Cybercrime could continue to increase which means cybersecurity careers could be both profitable and long-lasting. By the year 2021, cybersecurity is likely to be one of the fastest growing industries in the world
