      MATTHEW 14 – BEHEADED

So he sent and had John beheaded in prison. And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother. Then his disciples came and took away the body and buried it, and went and told Jesus. (Matthew 14:10-12)

John the Baptist was an instrumental ambassador for the Lord Jesus. Without fear, John spoke boldly concerning the coming kingdom. John would condemn the hypocritical Pharisees and preach to the masses about what true righteousness was; that salvation was not experienced through the law or a Hebrew bloodline but from the repentance from sin and the exercise of faith in the person of Jesus Christ.

John’s testimony threatened many of the Jewish leaders who had a stronghold on the Hebrew people. While the Pharisees preached the law, John preached the judgment of God and the repentance of sin. Many people who heard Johns’s message were saved and were publicly baptized. Sadly, many of the Hebrew converts faced a lifetime of exile by their family and communities.

      CHALLENGE

John took his calling to preach the kingdom of God very seriously.

John preached with great zeal and holy conviction. Sadly, John’s witness for Jesus would eventually cost him his life by decapitation.

Today, God has the same message for you. Have you answered His calling? In doing so, it may cost you your life like it did Johns. Nevertheless, be of good cheer for Jesus’s promises to the saints that are “faithful unto death,” He “will give you a crown of life” (Revelation 2:10).

For believers today, the life and testimony of John the Baptist pose an effective challenge. John was totally dedicated to the task that God had given him. He didn’t alter his message to fit in or stay out of trouble. Rather, he loudly declared repentance and directed them toward the arrival of Jesus Christ. His example serves as a reminder that genuine submission to God frequently necessitates bravery, selflessness, and unshakable trust.
Many people in today’s world find it difficult to accept God’s call because they are afraid of being rejected, losing something, or feeling uncomfortable. Like John, believers must occasionally defend the truth even when it is controversial. Being faithful to God’s plan may entail putting up with criticism, disagreement, or difficulties that put one’s spiritual fortitude to the test. Nonetheless, the narrative of John the Baptist inspires Christians to hold fast, believing that God would reward those who genuinely serve Him.
Dramatic acts of service or public sermons are not the only means to fulfill God’s calling. It may also entail leading a life that exemplifies godly principles in day-to-day pursuits including employment, education, and interpersonal interactions. Practical methods to show dedication to God’s work include being nice, upholding integrity, and encouraging others. Believers develop spiritually and become proficient evangelists when they continue to be obedient in minor duties.
John’s life also emphasizes the value of tenacity. He remained steadfast in his beliefs despite being imprisoned and ultimately killed as a result of his ministry. This illustration prompts Christians to assess their own commitment and readiness to fully follow God. Discipline, prayer, and faith in God’s promises are frequently necessary for spiritual development.

Reflecting on the question “Have you answered His calling?” truly makes me think about my own journey and the things that resonate deeply within me. I believe everyone has a unique path or purpose, and it’s up to us to discover and embrace it.

For me, answering a calling goes beyond just vocation; it’s about aligning my actions with my values and passions. Sometimes it feels daunting, especially when the path isn’t clear or when external pressures weigh heavily. However, I’ve found that moments of introspection—whether through meditation, journaling, or simply taking quiet time—help me connect with what feels right.

I also think it’s important to be open to signs and opportunities that can guide us. It takes courage to pursue what we feel called to do, but I believe that following that inner voice can lead to fulfillment and a sense of belonging.

Asking myself if I have answered his calling is a difficult question to answer. I feel like I challenge myself to be better every day, and sometimes it takes getting knocked back to see where I can be better. My journey with my faith has really taken off in the past few years, but to answer the question, I don’t think my understanding has grown strong enough to be able to do as much as I would like. That’s something I can control, so moving forward, I hope to reflect on this question more often to see how I’ve been growing in my faith.

John the Baptist’s story in Matthew 14:10-12 is both powerful and unsettling. He stood for truth in a way that most people would find difficult today. John was not afraid to confront sin, even when it meant speaking against powerful leaders. because of this, he ultimately lost his life. That part really stood out to me, because it shows how serious his commitment to God was.
I also think its important that John’s message focused on repentance and real change, not just following rules or traditions. That feels relevant now, since people can still get caught up in appearances instead of genuine faith.
The challenge in this passage is honestly intimidating. Being told to follow God no matter the cost is not easy to accept. Most people, like comfort and security. However, John’s example shows that faith requires courage and sacrifice.
Overall, this passage makes me reflect on whether I would stay faithful under pressure or choose what is easier when it demands everything from me.

Reading about John the Baptist really challenges me. I am inspired by his boldness and his willingness to speak the truth about God’s kingdom, even when it put his life at risk. It makes me reflect on my own faith and whether I am truly willing to answer God’s calling, no matter the cost. I want to follow John’s example by standing firm in my convictions and living boldly for Jesus, trusting in His promise that those who remain faithful will receive the crown of life.

Standing for what’s right, especially when it comes to God, is not always easy, and it has cost me.
When I was 16 years old, I had a fake ID. I was out running around with my older cousin because I felt safe with her. However, I didn’t realize that one day I would be sitting in church, ready to rededicate my life to Christ. When that day came, I remember telling her I would no longer be joining her when it came to going to the club. First, I was underage. Second, I was using someone else’s ID. And third, I was creating an unhealthy reality for myself.
That day in church, I remember feeling the love of God in a way I thought I had lost. It was a reminder that He never left me. From that moment, I began making changes in my life. I started therapy and came face to face with repentance.
It cost me relationships. It cost me being misunderstood. It meant outgrowing people I thought would be in my life forever. It required walking away from things that felt good in the moment but did not align with God.
Just like John the Baptist, I have found myself speaking to others from my own experiences; my past, my mistakes, and my repentance. Because of this, I understand “it may cost you your life.” For me, it meant letting go of my old ways in order to receive a fresh wind of grace, mercy, and a renewed heart.

John’s preaching about God’s judgment and the need for repentance sharply contrasted with the Pharisees’ focus on the Law, striking a chord with the crowds and leading many to be baptized. This growing movement, powered by his bold witness, threatened the leaders’ influence and control. The challenge at the end of the passage is compelling; it asks whether we’ve answered God’s call and reminds us that being faithful can sometimes come at a great cost, even “unto death.” History shows that those who stood for what’s right often faced harsh consequences. Yet there’s also the beautiful promise from Revelation 2:10: for those “faithful unto death,” there is the “crown of life.” It’s a message both serious and full of hope, and John’s story, though from long ago, still speaks strongly today about courage, conviction, and the sacrifices faith can demand.
