Microsoft Word is an application that is used for information recording and sharing. I have used it for multiple different high-school and college classes. Discord, is an voice/video streaming and sharing application used for communication. I use this daily when talking to my friends. It has great customizability options. To allow us to set up our server for our own unique needs. Such as, 3D printing, Server hosting, and basic tech help with the ability to stream our screens to one another. Notepad, is another application that can be used to simply take notes and save them. Or, when “upgraded” with Notepad++ it can be used to write code your own scripts. Google Chrome, is an application that I would say 99% of individuals use or have used in the past. It serves as a tool to access the internet and browse for websites of your desire.

If we are in fact asking about 4 different applications on an operating system and what their purpose is, there are many applications to choose from. One application I use on the regular is Canva. The purpose of the application is a platform for graphic design ranging from postcards and logos, to full webpage design where user share free and paid graphics that allow you to customize the designs to your specifications. The designs can be as simple or complex as you can imagine.

Another type of application used is Open LP. The purpose of this application is an open source presentation software, similar to Powerpoint, but designed for worship services where users can display worship songs and lyrics, scriptures, multimedia presentations and alert notifications. This is a great resource for small churches because it is a free software.

The third type of software I would name is Intuit QuickBooks. QuickBooks purpose is an accounting software for businesses and companies to manage payroll and finances for organizations.

Finally, the last application is Bitdefender. Bitdefender is a cybersecurity antivirus software application whose purpose is to protect users form viruses and malware across multiple operating system environments such as Windows, MacOS, iOS, and Android.

        Hi James,

I enjoyed reading your post. You did a really nice job of explaining four different operating system applications. I am very familiar with Canva, as I use it for my job as a Graphic Designer and Media Manager. It is a great and easy application to use, to help with bringing designs to life. I absolutely love Canva! The other three I am not really familiar with. I have heard of Intuit QuickBooks, as several people I know use it. I have heard that it is a great tool. As far as Open LP, I have never heard of it. But, at our church we use ProPresenter. Do you know of it’s similar? I have never heard of Bitdefender, but it sounds like it would be a quality cybersecurity software application.

          Thanks Caleb,

Yes I have definitely heard of ProPresenter. I also like Proclaim by Logos, and Easy Worship as other presentation software’s. BitDefender is a good application, but I am sure there are many other cybersecurity programs that do just as good or better.

        James,

I have also used Canva to make thumbnails for some of my friends who are content creators. It is simple and easy to use. While you may not find everything you need. It is great to learn and get a basic idea of what and how to look at graphic design from a pure beginner in my opinion.

I have not heard of ProPresenter. This is something I will definitely keep in mind for our church services and see what I could do with it. Thank you so much for the information!

Many applications help us complete everyday tasks on a computer. One common application is Microsoft Word. People use it to create and edit documents like papers, reports, and letters. Word has useful tools like spell check and formatting features to make your work look professional.

Another useful application is Google Chrome, a web browser that helps users access the internet. With Chrome, you can search for information, check emails, watch videos, and browse websites. It is one of the most popular ways to explore the web.

Adobe Photoshop is another useful tool. It edits photos and creates digital artwork. While photographers and graphic designers mainly use it, students can also use it for creative school projects.

Lastly, there is Zoom, a video conferencing application that became important during remote learning and working from home. Zoom allows people to have virtual meetings, share screens, and record sessions. It helps you stay connected with classmates, teachers, or coworkers when you cannot meet in person.

        Hello,

This is a great summary of a few popular software applications. You have the standards that have been around forever, such as the Microsoft Office Suite (and even that has changed over the years). I find it interesting how what is going on in society affects the use of some of these software applications. For instance, I had not had much experience with Zoom prior to Covid, but the pandemic and “lockdowns” that followed drove the need for people to find a way to connect.

There are many different types of applications and scenarios that an operating system is useful. If a user wants to connect a computer to a printer, the operating systems lets the computer interact with the printer hardware. Downloading an app like HP’s printer app can further help devices connect to a specific printer.

Operating systems also control the use of files in a system so that they can stay organized. For Windows, these files can easily be seen on File Explorer. There are apps, like Files by Google, that allow you to copy files to your Google Account.

Device Manager is a platform for managing some components of a computer, allowing an IT to analyze what is going on with the computer’s devices through the operating system. When I access my laptop’s Device Manager, it shows several devices and even displays the fact that I have the app Microsoft OneNote installed.

Similarly, using Task Manager allows IT professionals to see what applications are running or are currently using the CPU/Memory. This is important for troubleshooting any issues with the software which would affect the operating system as a whole. For example, if I have the Microsoft Teams app opened, then I could see how much CPU and Memory it is using.

Great post Isabelle. While I have used Googles Suite of applications (Docs, Sheets, Slides) before that are alternatives to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc, I haven’t used Files by Google that much. I guess my question would be, were Google applications designed primarily for Android OS or primarily as cloud applications for multiple OS as they are used on Windows computers as well? I have used Macs a few times as well, and while Microsoft has designed Office for Mac I have never used any Google applications on a Macbook either, is this possible?

Software applications run on our operating system and help us accomplish specific tasks. Some common types are Freeware, which is software that is offered for free. Open Source, which allows users to use and modify the code, and licensed software applications or packages that require some sort of license to use.

Much of what I use in my job is commercially licensed software. I have the Microsoft Office Suite installed on my computer at work and use Word, Excel, Teams, and Outlook daily. Another application that I use is Adobe Acrobat. Note that I have Adobe Reader at home, which is a Freeware application. At work, I need the ability to edit PDFs and therefore have a license for Adobe Acrobat.

Additionally, I use applications on my mobile devices. I have an application called AppSuite that I am able to use to access my work tasks if I am out in the field. Additionally, I use my Teams app on my work cell to stay connected when in the field or traveling. I am always a call away from my members (customers) with my Dialpad application that provides me with a desk phone number that will ring to my desk, as well as my cell. These are just a few of the applications that I interact with daily.

        Hi Teisha,

Thanks for your post and some new information. I worked from home for a couple of years and my agency did not have the Dialpad app. This would have been a great tool as many times I was making calls from my cell phone and trying to block the number. I appreciate the information and how you explained different types of software for OS. Thanks again.

Hello! When it comes to operating system applications, there are several which are known as system utilities or system programs.

One of them is File explorer, in which its purpose is for file management. They serve as the main interface for interacting with the computers storage system, allowing users to access documents, media and installed programs.

Task Manager- for system performance monitoring and process management. they provide detailed information about CPU, memory, disk and network usage.

Another is Control Panel. It’s purpose is for system configuration and settings ,management. These tools allows users to change system settings such as network setup, display resolution, user account controls and privacy settings.

These are some of the basic operating application systems that i typically encounter and use as i have been going in depth into computers, and it is no surprise that many people use them on the daily. I hope this helps!

Hello, Carlos! This is a great introduction to some system utilities that are available with operating system applications. I also mentioned File Explorer and Task Manager in my post, which I think just shows how important a lot of these tools are. Also, I like that you mentioned Control Panel because it can take you to so many important settings and controls from security controls to hardware or even to the internet. It is great to have several different groups of options to work with. For anyone in the IT field or even anyone doing something related to it, all of the tools you mentioned are essential.

        Great post Carlos,

I wasn’t sure if operating applications were application built in to the OS itself, or any application that ran on the OS. Either way, great breakdown of File Explorer, Task Manager and Control Panel, which I do use practically on a daily basis. Just to add another the Services application allows you to control which programs are enabled or disabled at startup.

What are operating applications and their purpose? In thinking about operating systems, they are the liaison between hardware and software applications. Operating applications, also known as operating system applications, are software programs designed to work closely with the operating system to perform specific tasks. The applications are divided into several groups or components.
There are File Management Applications which help you store, organize, and retrieve files. One of the most common is Windows Explorer. This is used every time you request a file to be opened or viewed. The main purpose is to view, open, copy, move and manage files.
System Utility files are those that clean and back up your files. Some examples of these are Disk Cleanup, Recovery Software, Data Security. The disk cleanup is used to delete temporary files from your computer. This process frees space on your computer.
A third example is Device Drivers. These connect the operating system with the hardware devices so they can communicate. Some of these are video card drivers, sound card drivers, printer drivers, Bluetooth drivers.
The final example is Interface Applications, these are points of communication between components and systems. Examples of these are GUI’s Graphic User Interfaces, Voice Interfaces, Touch Interfaces.

There are many operating applications on any given computer. Some are even tailored to the computer itself, while others can be used on all computers.

As a Graphic Designer and Media Producer for my church, there are many different applications that I use. Because of that, many come to mind. The first one that comes to mind is DaVinci Resolve. DaVinci Resolve is an editing software used to edit different types of videos. It’s used for short films, YouTube videos, and even Marvel movies. It has many features such as cut and edit pages, fairlight (adudio), fusion (VFX and motion graphics), and many other features.

I also use an application called Finder. Now, this is the equivalent to File Explorer on Windows Operating Systems. I use both, my Macbook for Work, and my Dell computer for personal use. These types of file programs provide a place to store files and projects for easy access and storage.

Another application is task manager. Task Manager is a handy tool that helps you see what applications are running on your computer. And, it also shows how much memory, CPU, disk, and network storage each specific application is pulling. You can end a task if it is not responding and you can’t close it, and it can also show users, services, and can open a new application.

The final application I use is Google Chrome. This is an internet browser by Google that allows you to access the internet. It helps you access information, streaming services, email, work projects, college, banks, etc. It is a gateway to life, in a sense. We can do a lot through this application. This is why applications are so important to us. They help us to accomplish the things necessary to get jobs, college, and personal things done.

Thank you for sharing Caleb. I also appreciate you putting in your line of work and what operating systems you use. Its great to see what OS others utilize depending on their career as it bring in more detail and in to light what others may not know. DaVinci Resolve is a new one for me as i did not know it was used mainly for software editing. Thanks for sharing!
