Mile2 Cybersecurity Certifications – November 10, 2025
The CISSO has no prerequisite work experience: requirement for eligibility. According to its exam blueprint, “there are no minimum requirements needed to become a Certified Information Systems Security Officer (CISSO).” Mile2 Cybersecurity Certifications by contrast, the CISSP requires at least five years of full-time security work experience in two or more of the eight CBK domains (or four with specific substitutions). Benefit: This means a candidate can pursue CISSO earlier in their career, or a mid-career professional can quickly obtain the certification and thereby demonstrate leadership readiness without waiting for years of experience.
The CISSO is designed for “managers, auditors, and INFOSEC professionals” with a focus on managing and leading the security function of an organization. For organizations, this means that CISSO can serve as a clear indicator of competence for someone stepping into a security leadership role (e.g., Information Systems Security Officer), rather than merely being a purely technical practitioner. Whereas CISSP emphasizes a broad spectrum of technical + managerial domains. ISC2
It has been “validated by the NSA for CNSSI-4012 … and NSTISSI-4011” according to the NICCS catalog. NICCS For those serving in or supporting federal roles, or for institutions that value federal compliance frameworks, this alignment can make CISSO a pragmatic choice.
The CISSO offers different exam delivery approaches, including an online exam taken via the Mile2 platform and a proctored version under ANSI/DoD 8140 standards. For organizations and candidates who value convenience, accelerated paths, or self-paced preparation, CISSO affords flexibility that can help reduce time-to-certification.
Given your training organization (Mile2®) and audience of advancing security professionals and aspiring managers, CISSO can act as a “bridge” certification: It helps professionals demonstrate readiness for leadership (officer-level) responsibilities without requiring the deeper experience (and investment) the CISSP mandates. This makes CISSO particularly useful for organizational talent development, internal career-pathway programs, and preparing staff for security leadership roles sooner.
The cybersecurity landscape has evolved — and so has leadership training. Mile2’s Certified Information Systems Security Officer (CISSO) builds on the foundation many associate with CISSP — but moves beyond memorization to practical, hands-on leadership. With mile2’s CISSO, you’ll analyze real breach case studies, assess internal controls in motion, and explore behavioral compliance — because modern security failures often start with people, not firewalls.
Ultimately, the CISSO bridges management, technical depth, and human insight — preparing today’s leaders to build secure, compliant, and adaptive organizations. Where CISSP defines knowledge, CISSO proves capability.
