KeymasterMATTHEW 20 – SPIRITUALLY IDLE
3 And he went out about the third hour and saw others standing idle in the marketplace, 4 and said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.’ So they went. Matthew 20:3-4
The Bible teaches that humanity is “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14). In doing so, God created us for His glory and His kingdom for His purpose. He has predetermined a unique work, very specific to each person (Ephesians 2:10).
Although this is the case, many Christians are, spiritually speaking, “idly, standing around in the marketplace” while pursuing finite goals towards superficial ends. While many of these carnal objectives have their place in this world, much of it is like burnt-up chaff in the wind, having very little value in God’s kingdom.
While God has called us Christians to be fruitful and work in his vineyard, in this case, God’s kingdom, many of His saints are sadly occupied idly in a world that has monopolized their time, talents, and treasures.
CHALLENGE
You have been created for God’s purpose. He has called you for His glory. And for every saint, God has predetermined a spiritual work, “before the foundation of the world, to walk in it.”
Do you know Him? If so, Christian, it’s time to start working in God’s vineyard during the day “for when night comes, no man works.”

ParticipantThis week’s devotional touches on the importance of using our resources (time, gifts, etc.) for God’s glory. In Matthew 20, the vineyard owner calls several people to go work in His vineyard to receive their pay. Being called by God to serve is a great honor, so it is important to take action and to go do it. It may be difficult because of other things vying for our attention, but we should focus on what God is telling us to do. Of course, we should seek God’s will and Word for what He wants us to do specifically, but once we know, we should obey. That can be a specific thing, like serving at a certain church event or using a specific talent God has given us. However, it can also be a general calling that applies to all Christians, such as being a light to others we encounter each day by showing God’s love to them.

ParticipantI find this devotional very interesting. To me, it explains that God has given us everything we need. When He explains “standing idle in the marketplace”, it can mean that even though God has given us spiritual gifts to work in His kingdom, we tend to often be distracted by what’s around us, chasing after things that aren’t necessarily important, but rather on His glory. We often find ourselves seeking constantly for that ministry of of work that we are called to do, but as life goes on, standing still, we become engulf in those moments. When we allow these distractions, it takes away of of building His kingdom. staying vigilant, patiently, and trusting Him fully will allow us to pursue that focus and enjoy what He has bestowed upon us.
