A SOHO (Small Office/Home Office) router is a networking device used to provide internet access, security, and network management for our homes or small businesses. These routers include several features that help keep a network running properly and securely. One important feature is Network Address Translation (NAT). The purpose of NAT is to allow multiple devices such as laptops, smartphones, printers, and smart TVs on a private network to share a single public IP address when accessing the internet. This helps save IP addresses and also provides a basic layer of security by hiding internal addresses from outside networks. Another important feature is the built-in firewall. Since firewalls monitor incoming and outgoing traffic and also blocks unauthorized access based on security rules, this helps protect devices on the network from many external threats. SOHO routers also use Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). The purpose of DHCP is to automatically assign IP addresses to devices on the network, which makes configuration easier and ensures devices can communicate properly.

Wireless capability is another common feature in SOHO routers. Most SOHO routers act as a wireless access point, which allows devices like our laptops, smartphones, and tablets to connect through Wi-Fi. Wireless security protocols such as WPA2 or WPA3 help protect these connections by encrypting the data being transmitted, which helps keep our information private. Many SOHO routers also include features like port forwarding and Quality of Service (QoS). Port forwarding allows specific traffic to reach a device inside the network when needed, and QoS helps prioritize certain types of traffic, such as video streaming or video calls, so everything runs more smoothly. Overall, these features work together to provide reliable internet access, improve performance, and help secure small networks. Learning about how these features work, helps me better understand what is happening behind the scenes on networks I use every day.
