ParticipantMATTHEW 16 – WHO IS HE?
When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked his disciples, saying “Who do you say that I, the Son of Man, am?” Matthew 16:13
The question posed by the Lord Jesus to His disciples, may at first, appear to be trivial. But it’s not. It’s one of the most critical questions that they will have to address in their lives. Jesus asked, “Who do you say, the Son of man is?
After Jesus questions the disciples, they speedily begin to echo the circulating rumors, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”Jesus was already aware of what others were speculating concerning his person. But Jesus wasn’t interested in what others were saying; He was interested as to what His disciples believed. Jesus responded, “But who do YOU say that I am?”
The response to this question has eternal ramifications. It dictates whether you have peace or chaos, spiritual security or emotional instability, happiness or depression, eternal life or eternal death.
CHALLENGE
Later in Matthew 16, Simon Peter responded wisely to Jesus’s question, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Although Simon Peter knew that Jesus was the Son of God, the real question was what was he going to do about it? Jesus asks, “who do YOU say that I am?”
My friend, who is Jesus to you? And what are you going to do about it? Will you make Him Lord? Will you like Peter, follow Him? Will you pray and study so that you may learn more about your creator, who loves you and has great interest in your person?
Jesus is waiting to hear from you; after all, He has been for a long time.

ParticipantMatthew 16 really comes down to one important question Jesus asks: “Who do YOU say that I am?” It might sound simple, but it’s actually a big deal. At first, the disciples repeat what other people are saying John the Baptist, Elijah, or a prophet—but Jesus isn’t worried about opinions. He wants to know what they believe.
Peter answers, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God,” and that’s the right answer. But it doesn’t stop there. Knowing who Jesus is means you have to decide what you’re going to do about it.
To me, this shows that faith is personal. It’s not about what others say or believe, it’s about your own relationship with Jesus. So the real question is: Who is He to you, and are you willing to follow Him?

ParticipantOne of the most significant questions a person will ever encounter is the one Jesus posed in Matthew 16. “Who do you say that I am?” He asked his followers. He was encouraging people to think carefully about their beliefs rather than looking for information. Many people’s perceptions of Jesus varied. He was regarded by some as a wonderful teacher or a prophet. But Jesus wasn’t concerned about what other people thought. He was curious about the core beliefs of his followers.
Even now, this question is still significant. It is necessary for each individual to develop a personal relationship with Jesus. Relying on what other people say or think is insufficient. Faith demands a direct reaction because it is personal. People now are asked to acknowledge Jesus’ actual identity, just as Peter courageously proclaimed that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. This realization is crucial because it determines one’s eternal destiny and spiritual path.
There is more to the struggle than just understanding Jesus. It needs to be done. Choosing to follow Christ and live in accordance with His teachings is what it means to believe in Him. This calls for dedication, self-control, and a readiness to develop spiritually. It might involve praying, reading the Bible, and making choices in daily life that are consistent with one’s faith. Belief is incomplete and does not result in genuine transformation without action.
Knowing who Jesus is also brings clarity and purpose. It offers consolation during uncertain times and direction throughout challenging circumstances. A person gains direction and confidence that their life has purpose beyond fleeting circumstances when they acknowledge Christ as Lord.
In conclusion, the question, “Who do you say that I am?” asks each person to consider their faith and give an honest response. It is an exhortation to live a life that reflects faith in Jesus Christ and to transition from knowledge to commitment. - April 12, 2026 at 10:55 pm #114152

ParticipantI believe the question in Matthew 16 is a question that all of us as followers have answered at some point in our lives. To me, Jesus is someone whom I look to model my life after. He is someone who cares for me and wants to see me succeed. Someone who will love me, and when I may turn away from him. Jesus is someone who, no matter the circumstances, will never leave my side. I think these are things that I need to share more with others. Spreading the word and sharing my encounters and experiences with others may be all they need to want to go and start to build their faith. When I read the last question, “Will you pray and study so that you may learn more about your creator, who loves you and has great interest in your person?” my immediate answer is yes! The joy you can find in praying and growing in your faith is unmatched by anything you can experience in life, and I believe everyone can experience this joy if they go out and seek the Lord.
