      MATTHEW 9 – PARDON & POWER

“And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee” Matthew 9:2

History has presented many inspirational spiritual leaders. Each one had a significant impact on many world religions that continue even until this day.

For example, Confucius, the founder of Confucianism, emphasized personal, civic, and political morality.

Also, there was Siddhartha Gautama, who was also known as the “the enlightenment one”, who founded Buddhism; teaching asceticism and deep meditation. Buddha taught that through deprivation and mortification of the flesh, man could attain a state of awakening, or as we understand it, Nirvana.

In addition to these religious men, there was Krishna of Hinduism and Mohamed from the Islamic faith. These religions focused on external works and the deprivation of man.  Although their teachings appeared to be profound,  none of their doctrines ever provided a provision for the forgiveness of sins.

Although this was the case, there was one who not only preached the forgiveness of sin but He also had the authority to forgive them. His name is JESUS!

      CHALLENGE

There have been thousands of Gods and spiritual leaders throughout the ages but only one has claimed to be God. And not only God but also had the power of God. Do you know Him? His name is Jesus, the Lord, and God of the universe.

These days I have been going to see my therapist in order to do some much needed deeper work. Although on the outside it may look like things have been worked out, all growth isn’t visible. That is what came to mind for me when reading the scripture Mathew 9:2, when Jesus first forgave the man’s sins before healing him physically. It reminds me that sometime the deeper healing happens within, and it may not be something others can immediately see. What does stands out to me in this passage is not only the healing Jesus did, but the authority Jesus showed in offering forgiveness. This speaks to the idea that spiritual and emotional healing can be just as important, if not more important, than physical healing. It also shows how my faith plays a role in the process, because the man and those around him believed before they saw the outcome. In this season of my life, I am learning that growth requires patience, humility, and honesty with myself. Doing deeper work is not always easy, but it is necessary, and it reminds me that real healing often happens underneath it all before it shows outwardly.

This passage from Matthew really highlights what makes Jesus stand out compared to other spiritual leaders in history. Many influential figures like Confucius, Buddha, Krishna, and Muhammad offered moral teachings, discipline, and guidance on how to live a better life. Their teachings shaped cultures and religions that still exist today, which shows how powerful their influence was. However, as the post points out, their teachings mainly focused on human effort, self-discipline, or external works.

What makes Jesus unique is that He didn’t just teach people how to live; He addressed humanity’s deepest problem—sin. In Matthew 9:2, Jesus forgives the man’s sins before healing him, showing that He had divine authority, not just wisdom. That claim alone separates Him from every other spiritual leader. Jesus didn’t claim to point the way to God; He claimed to be God.

This idea challenges people to think about who Jesus really is. If His claims are true, then He isn’t just another teacher but the Savior, offering forgiveness and grace rather than something we have to earn on our own.
