      MATTHEW 12 – GOT NEED?

“Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: how he entered the house of God and ate the showbread which was not lawful for him to eat, nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests”? (Matthew 12:3-4/1 Samuel 21)

David and his men are running for their lives. In a jealous rage, Saul is in hot pursuit of David, God’s anointed one. David runs where he knows it’s safe, the tabernacle – the house of God. At the doorway, David is met by the high priest with provision – the shewbread and a sword.

The fresh bread renewed David’s strength. The sword that is now in his possession quickens the spirit of the vagabond king! For in his hand is not just any weapon but the sword of Goliath, the giant he sleighed many years ago!

Although David was seeking only a safe haven, God provided so much more than that; physical sustenance and a weapon of warfare.

      CHALLENGE

Is satan in hot pursuit of your soul? Do you feel overwhelmed with satan’s blitzkrieg? Or do you feel helpless under his spell?

Then run where it’s safe, under the shadow of the great captain of our salvation, the Lord Jesus Christ! He will sustain you and defend you with the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God! – for He has conquered both death and hell! Run to Him!!!

At times it can truly feel like the enemy is in pursuit of our soul, especially when we are overwhelmed by temptation, fear, or discouragement. In those moments, the example of David reminds us not to rely on our own strength but to run to God for refuge. Just as David found bread for strength and a sword for defense, we find spiritual nourishment and protection in Jesus Christ. We are not meant to fight spiritual battles alone; Christ sustains us through His Word and reminds us that the enemy is already defeated. When we feel helpless, the safest and strongest response is to draw near to Him, trust in His provision, and stand firm in faith.

Matthew 12’s challenge serves as a reminder to Christians that coming to God is the safest course of action when confronted with spiritual difficulties, fear, or temptation. The narrative describes David’s escape from King Saul, who was out to destroy him. David fled to God’s house, the tabernacle, in his hour of peril and despair. He was merely seeking protection, but God gave him far more than he anticipated. David was given the sword of Goliath to protect himself and bread to help him regain his physical vigor. This instance illustrates a crucial spiritual lesson: when we seek God in our hour of need, He not only keeps us safe but also fortifies and prepares us for the struggles ahead.
People today face spiritual struggles in the same manner. These difficulties could manifest as overwhelming obstacles in life, fear, temptation, or discouragement. These difficulties are frequently characterized in the Bible as attacks by the enemy, who aims to erode faith and drive people away from God. When people attempt to handle these challenges by themselves, they could feel helpless or discouraged. But according to what the Bible says, God is the source of true power and stability. Believers are called to take refuge in Jesus Christ, just as David fled to God’s house for safety.
The soul is both nourished and protected by Christ. During trying times, believers find strength, serenity, and direction in His presence. The Bible, also referred to as the “sword of the Spirit,” gives believers the strength to withstand spiritual difficulties and maintain their faithfulness. Believers are reassured that they are not fighting this battle alone by Christ’s triumph over sin, death, and evil.
As a result, the challenge inspires people to put their faith in Christ in the face of life’s challenges. Protection and rejuvenation come from fleeing to Him in prayer, faith, and obedience. Believers today can find enduring refuge, hope, and victory in Jesus Christ, just as David found strength and provision in God’s presence.

This passage really reminds us of the importance of seeking refuge in God, especially during tough times. Just like David found strength and sustenance when he was being pursued, we too can find comfort and empowerment in our relationship with the Lord. It’s a powerful reminder that even in our desperate moments, God is ready to provide us not just with what we need to survive, but also with the tools to thrive.

When life feels overwhelming and we feel attacked from all sides, running to Christ is essential. His Word is our weapon, offering us wisdom, strength, and hope. It’s comforting to know that we are never alone in our struggles. Let’s lean into Him and draw on His strength to face whatever challenges come our way.

These situations show how God provides for His people even in desperate times. When David and his men were running from Saul, they were hungry and in danger. Even though the showbread was normally only for the priests, the priest gave it to David because their need was urgent. This shows that human need and mercy can sometimes be more important than strict religious rules. Jesus later used this example in the Gospel of Matthew to teach that compassion should come before legalism.
I also think the symbolism in the story is powerful. David not only received bread to restore his strength but also the sword of Goliath, which reminded him of how God had already helped him defeat his enemies. In the same way, believers today can look to God for both strength and protection. The message of the challenge is that when people feel overwhelmed by struggles, or temptation, they should turn to Jesus for help. Just like David found safety and provision, Christians believe Christ offers spiritual strength and guidance.

In the times I feel Satan is in hot pursuit of my soul, it is also the times I feel most distanced from God. The struggles that come as well as the hurt, shame, guilt, anxiety, and depression, are all signs to me that I feel and know I have become distanced. In a way, it almost feels like a sense of conviction from God, and that’s not me saying he’s putting me through all that stuff on purpose, but for a reason and to give me a sign. I feel like Satan’s blitzkrieg isn’t as overwhelming as me being able to feel distanced from God. I know when I am at my best and actively growing my faith, that is when Satan begins to fight back. But knowing that I am actively growing my faith, these attacks from Satan are just attacks to try to slow me down. These attacks are almost a good thing because they’re a sign that you are growing, and Satan is actually the one who’s overwhelmed. He doesn’t like seeing us strengthen our faith, and when he does see it, he wants to retaliate because he fears the power of God. Satan’s blitzkrieg is a sign that he is fearful of our relationship with God, and he ultimately wants to take that away from us.

Lately, it feels like the devil has been constantly attacking me and my health. Over the past few days, I’ve leaned more on Jesus than ever before, and I’m deeply grateful for Him. I’ve always believed that God’s power will always triumph over Satan’s, and He is a safe haven for anyone in need, even if they don’t fully understand Him. God has brought about things in my life that I once thought were impossible, and I am truly grateful. Though Satan may be in hot pursuit of my soul, I don’t feel overwhelmed or helpless because I know God has my back wherever I am. I don’t need to meet Him where He is; if I tried, I never could. But God humbles Himself, coming down from His high and almighty place to meet us right where we are, even though we are lowly sinners.

I have grown through many experiences where my anxiety, at least at the time, felt like it was winning. However, what I did not fully understand then was that God’s protection had already been extended for that very moment long before I even existed. Through moments like these, I have learned that my safety often relies on my ability to be still and trust God. Has it been easy? Absolutely not.
I can relate to this verse because I truly believe God often provides exactly what we need in moments when we feel the most pressured or vulnerable. David and his men were running for their lives, yet when David entered the house of God he received more than just a place of safety. He was given bread to restore his strength and the sword of Goliath, which to me served as a reminder of God’s previous victory in his life. David ran to the place where he knew God’s presence would be, and in doing so he found both provision and protection.
If this is not me, I do not know what is. I am definitely running straight to God every time. Why? Because time and time again, like the moment I mentioned earlier, I have seen God’s hand of protection and provision in my life. When I begin to feel pressured or overwhelmed, I run to God and rest in knowing that I am safe and that I can depend on His Word.
